Workshop - Understand What’s Happening Under the Hood: Visually Map your Server Functions
Server functions are one of the most powerful ways to add real backend logic to a Bolt app. But as soon as your app has multiple functions, database tables, API calls, and error states, it can become hard to see how everything fits together.
In this hands-on Bolt.new Premium Customer Workshop, we'll build a simple Lead Triage Command Center in Bolt, then use Miro to visualize the server functions behind it.
What we're building
A Visual Backend Map for a Bolt app. We'll create a Bolt app with several server functions, then represent those functions on a Miro board as structured cards connected to frontend actions, database tables, external services, and error paths.
For the live build, we'll keep the app focused: users submit a lead, Bolt validates the input, checks for duplicates, classifies the request, scores the lead, saves the result, and shows the recommendation in a review dashboard.
Then we'll map that backend flow in Miro so the architecture is easier to inspect, explain, and improve.
Outcomes
By the end of this workshop, you'll understand:
How to decide what belongs in the frontend, the database, and server functions.
How to visually map server functions, inputs, outputs, database writes, API calls, and error paths.
How to use Miro as a structured planning layer instead of a vague whiteboard.
How to turn changes from a Miro board back into a Bolt implementation plan.
How to avoid backend spaghetti by designing before expanding your app.
Skills:
Server functions, backend architecture, visual planning, Miro workflows, Bolt databases, API design, structured prompts, implementation planning, error handling, AI-assisted app development
Difficulty: Intermediate
These workshops are designed to be stand-alone, so there is no need to attend prior sessions to get value from this one.
