Changing Lanes Film Screening Hosted by JOINERS and Bike East Bay
A teacher is killed by a hit-and-run driver on a four-lane Brooklyn boulevard. The community demands change. What follows is a fight over a street and a film about who cities are built for.
Join Bike East Bay and JOINERS for the first Northern California screening of Changing Lanes. The evening kicks off with a happy hour co-hosted with Car-Free Happy Hour and closes with a panel discussion featuring director Ben Wolf.
Synopsis: When a beloved teacher is tragically killed in a hit-and-run crash in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, a grassroots movement emerges to transform a notoriously dangerous four-lane boulevard into a safer, two-lane street with protected bike lanes. While many applaud the proposed road diet, it also sparks a backlash, led in part by a powerful local business owner. As government support begins to waver, neighbors unite to challenge entrenched interests and fight for a safer Greenpoint.
The film situates this local struggle within broader historical, environmental, political, and social contexts through interviews with politicians, activists, urban planners, entrepreneurs, and cultural icons including David Byrne and Janette Sadik-Khan. Changing Lanes makes a compelling call to action for democracy at street level.
