Conviction: Closing Reception

​Join us for the closing reception of Conviction — the first solo exhibition of paintings by Iranian-American artist Haleh Atabeigi — on its final Friday evening. The artist will be present, and wine will be served.

​Conviction is a body of paintings of garments, each belonging to a specific woman held in Iran's political prisons — some since released under conditions, others still captive. Rooted in the Woman, Life, Freedom movement, the works render the clothing empty of its wearer, so that each garment stands in for a woman who cannot stand before us. Among those the series honors are Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi and journalists Niloufar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi. Alongside the garments hang "Evin" nos. 1–27 — twenty-seven small canvases of handmade objects made by women inside Evin prison — and Time, a fifteen-minute video Atabeigi directed remotely in Iran.

​This week Urgent Matter published the exhibition's first press feature. "These women are there, they're fighting, and they're suffering, and they're not to be pitied," Atabeigi told writer Adam Schrader. "They're heroes." Spend the final evening among them — and with the artist who painted them — before the exhibition closes for good on Saturday.
