Public Speaking for Developers

It didn't land.
You spent 48 hours building a product at a hackathon, and it sank in a 3-minute pitch. The judges' faces stayed blank. All you remember is your hands shaking.
We've seen it over and over. Brilliant teams buried because they couldn't communicate what they built. Meanwhile, teams with rough code but sharp demos and storytelling shifted the entire room. The difference was never technical skill. It was how they used their voice.
Kaustubh Hiware has been standing in front of microphones since he was 8. Speeches, debates, standup comedy, academic conferences. As a Senior Software Engineer at Mercari, he writes code every day and he's been training the muscle of "how to deliver" just as long.
"Speaking in English in front of people terrifies me." That fear doesn't go away. But you can make it smaller. With the right preparation and the right practice.
This event won't end at "listening." On the day, every attendee will practice in small groups to practice their own public speaking. After practicing your 1-minute pitch in front of your group, the stage can be yours for a minute. Whether you take it is up to you.
伝わらなかった。
ハッカソンで48時間かけて作ったプロダクトが、3分のピッチで沈んだ。審査員の顔が「?」のまま終わった。自分の手が震えていたことだけ覚えている。
何度も見てきた。素晴らしいものを作ったチームが、伝え方を知らないだけで埋もれていく。逆に、コードは荒削りでもデモとストーリーで会場の空気を変えたチームがいる。差を生んでいたのは技術力ではなく、声の出し方だった。
Kaustubh Hiwareは8歳からマイクの前に立ってきた。スピーチ、ディベート、スタンダップコメディ、学術カンファレンス。Mercari Senior Software Engineerとして毎日コードを書きながら、「伝える」の筋肉も鍛え続けてきた人間がここにいる。
「英語で人前に立つのが怖い」——その恐怖は消えない。でも、小さくすることはできる。正しい準備と、正しい練習で。
このイベントは「聞いて終わり」にしない。当日、参加者は小グループに分かれ、自分自身のパブリックスピーキングを実践する。グループの前で1分ピッチを練習した後、ステージに立つチャンスが来る。それを掴むかどうかはあなた次第。

Lower the barrier to presenting in English — Through 1-minute pitches, create 10–15 people who take their first step speaking English in front of an audience. Grow the pool of English-capable speakers in Japan's tech industry
Produce conference speakers — Attendees learn how to write a CFP and actually submit one. Community members start appearing on stage at domestic and international conferences

Someone who has experienced every form of "speaking in front of people" will share practical techniques tailored specifically for engineers.
