Join us for an intimate conversation between Ruchi Sanghvi and Matt Mahan, current Mayor of San Jose and candidate for Governor of California.
Before he was leading the nation's 10th largest city, Matt Mahan was building in Silicon Valley. He helped form Causes—an early Facebook app that grew to 180M+ users across 150 countries and went on to launch Brigade, a venture-backed civic tech platform.
Matt grew up in Watsonville, CA, raised by a schoolteacher and a letter carrier. He commuted up to four hours a day by public bus to attend a better school in San Jose, went on to Harvard as an honors student and student body president, then spent a year in Bolivia building irrigation systems with family farmers. Back home, he taught middle school in San Jose through Teach for America before building organizations that helped millions of people engage in civic life. As mayor, he's focused on a simple idea: government should work—and be accountable when it doesn't.
We'll discuss his path from education and civic tech to City Hall, what he's learned running a major California city, and his vision for the state's future, including how technology and entrepreneurship fit into solving California's biggest challenges.
