​Sixteen World invites you to a conversation with photographer Tom Johnson, centred on Butoh, the book we published last year.

​The project documents Johnson’s sustained engagement with Butoh performance, focusing on the body as a site of transformation. Through a controlled, minimal visual language, the work isolates gesture, texture, and presence—moving between portraiture, sculpture, and performance documentation.

​The discussion will use Butoh as a starting point to look at Johnson’s wider practice: his approach to working with performers, his use of light and surface, and the way his images negotiate between control and unpredictability.

​The conversation will also situate the work within a broader photographic context, addressing how performance is translated into still images and what is gained—or lost—in that process.
