BETTER CINEMA WEDNESDAY · 13

7:30 pm on Wednesday (7/15), we will screen David Holzman’s Diary (1967). The film is one of the most representative works from the early years of the American independent film movement, combining elements of cinéma vérité, direct cinema, experimental film, and meta-cinema.
The film follows David, an unemployed young man who is inspired by Godard’s famous line: “Photography is truth, and cinema is truth twenty-four times per second” (“La photographie, c'est la vérité, et le cinéma, c'est vingt-quatre fois la vérité par seconde.”). He decides to pick up a portable camera and turn his everyday life into a film. He repeatedly films his girlfriend, his neighbors, and the streets of New York, trying to find meaning in life through the camera. Yet as the filming continues, the camera begins to alter reality, and the boundary between truth and fiction gradually becomes blurred.
David Holzman’s Diary is widely regarded as the first mockumentary in film history. Shot on location in New York in black and white with minimal lighting, the film adopts the techniques of cinéma vérité, only to ultimately turn the camera back onto cinema itself. As a “film about film,” it reflects on how the camera intervenes in reality through the protagonist’s act of filming his own life, offering a sharp critique of nonfiction cinema’s claim to capture “truth.” It has since become an important work of 1960s American independent cinema.
