About Event

The Growth Hub is our monthly gathering for an open exchange on the realities of building and scaling ventures in Japan.

When Coral Capital's founders began investing in 2012, Japan's startup scene was largely opaque: unwritten terms, thin precedent, few people willing to explain either.

Coral then released J-KISS, a free seed-stage contract template that gave founders common ground to negotiate from (Japan's counterpart to the US SAFE and KISS). It arranged one of the country's first SPVs, a vehicle pooling investors into a single deal, for SmartHR, and it started Startup Aquarium, a career fair that now draws around 3,000 people.

Coral calls itself an Ecosystem VC, one that supplies capital, talent and know-how rather than just a check. It oversees ¥60 billion+ across 140+ companies, from HR software (SmartHR) and fusion energy (Kyoto Fusioneering) to fintech (Ramp) and defense (Anduril).

Tiffany Kayo, Principal on Coral's Investment Team, joins moderator Francisco Soares (Special Advisor, Shibuya City) to share the view from the inside:

  • What makes an early-stage company venture-backable in Japan

  • Where the US venture playbook transfers to Japan, and where it doesn't (timing, valuation, round size)

  • What signals institutional investors look for before taking a company seriously

  • Building in Japan from day one versus entering after traction elsewhere

  • What a Japanese VC can realistically unlock, and what founders shouldn't expect

  • Priorities for the next 12 months

Conducted in English.
