Butterfly Sanctuary, Native Plant Gardens, & Environmental Justice in Pilsen, Chicago
Title: Butterfly Sanctuary and native plant gardens in Pilsen, Chicago. (with Claudia Galeno Sanchez and Women for Green Spaces/Mujeres por Espacios Verdes)
We will start the tour at our butterfly Sanctuary at 1857 W 19th St Chicago IL, 60608 (In front National Museum of Mexican Art at Harrison Park). Then to Orozco Community Academy to visit the school, where Women For Green Spaces started and has native plant gardens, which we created several years ago. After that we will walk to Cooper Dual Language Academy (where we also have Native plant gardens). The fourth stop is going to be The National Museum Mexican Art, 3 blocks away. At the Mexican Museum, we will visit two exhibitions "Under Pressure" and "Xochicago: Floating Gardens of the Chicago River and Mexico". After that we will go to Sims Metal Company (Sims Metal is a recycling factory). We are concerned about Sims' emissions, which we and many community members feel are currently at levels that endanger the workers, environment, and community.
