About Event

Most students can find the right information in a passage. The problem comes when they have to put it into their own words and do it using fewer words. They copy too much, cut too little, and run out of space before they've finished saying anything useful.

In this 2-hour workshop, Master Teacher Steven Sim teaches students a systematic method for writing concise, well-paraphrased summaries that score on both content and style — using the SLIM-T© framework, a Mind Stretcher method designed to take any passage and shrink it down to its essentials.

What students will learn:

  • A step-by-step system for tackling any summary question: Scope the question, Locate the right paragraphs, Identify the key ideas (while ignoring examples), and Merge similar points before transforming the language

  • Four specific transformation techniques that turn lifted text into original writing: Word Swap (synonym substitution), Word Type Change (shifting between parts of speech), Sentence Shrinking (clause reduction), and List Merging (compression) — each with clear formulas students can apply immediately

  • How to decide which information to keep and which to cut: Use categories like Time, Place, Condition, and Examples to separate essential content from disposable detail

  • How to write at different levels of compression: Practise both 20-word and 10-word summaries of the same passage, so students learn to control how tightly they condense

  • What examiners reward in the Style band: The difference between a response that earns 1–2 marks for occasional paraphrasing and one that reaches the top band (7 marks) through sustained, well-organised use of the student's own words and structures

Every technique is demonstrated through guided practice on passages drawn from Singapore-relevant topics, so students can see exactly how each transformation works before applying it themselves.

Who is this for?
Students who lose marks on summary questions, not because they can't find the points, but because they don't know how to rewrite them concisely and in their own words.
