The New Era of Work: How to Become an AI Generalist with Sandy Diao
For years, specialists were considered the gold standard in the workforce. Deep expertise, narrow focus, and years of dedicated training created a clear competitive advantage, while generalists were often viewed as lacking depth or focus. But AI is rapidly changing the equation. As the barriers to execution fall across nearly every function, the ability to adapt quickly, think across disciplines, and connect ideas across domains is becoming increasingly valuable. In many ways, we may be entering the era of the AI-powered generalist.
In this session, Sandy Diao will explore how AI is reshaping the future of work and why adaptable, cross-functional operators are uniquely positioned to thrive in this new environment. Drawing from her experience leading growth across startups and major tech companies, Sandy will share her own journey of becoming a growth generalist and the lessons she’s learned operating across functions, industries, and stages of company growth.
Together, we’ll unpack what it really means to be a “generalist” today and examine the evolving spectrum between generalists and specialists. Sandy will introduce a practical framework to help you identify where you currently sit and discuss how AI can help you intentionally expand your capabilities. She’ll also share her perspective on how traditional career paths, leadership structures, and organizational dynamics may continue to evolve as AI transforms the nature of execution and expertise.
You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of your own operating style, new ways to think about leverage and adaptability, and a practical lens for navigating long-term career growth in an AI-driven world. While expertise will always matter, the future may increasingly belong to people who can learn quickly, connect dots across functions, and operate fluidly in rapidly changing environments.
