Is there a lot of unspoken tension in your organization? Do people shut down opposing views or talk behind one another’s backs instead of to each other? Do you find yourself stuck in the middle wishing you had more formal authority? You’re not alone. In this fireside chat, we will discuss how to create the right conditions for healthy conflict, ensure conversations remain collaborative, and protect yourself and your career in the process. After all, research shows that organizations in which people feel free to safely disagree outperform other teams. They make better decisions. And the friction that accompanies disagreement can allow for creativity and growth. The good news? You don’t have to be the most senior person on the team to encourage productive tension without inviting drama.

Amy Gallo is a workplace expert who writes and speaks about gender, interpersonal dynamics, difficult conversations, feedback, and effective communication. She is the best-selling author of Getting Along: How to Work with Anyone (Even Difficult People) and the HBR Guide to Dealing with Conflict, as well as hundreds of articles for Harvard Business Review. From 2019 to 2025, Amy co-hosted HBR’s popular Women at Work podcast, which examines the struggles and successes of women in the workplace. She is frequently sought out by media outlets for her perspective on workplace dynamics, conflict, and difficult conversations. Her advice has been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Fast Company, Marketplace, Bloomberg Business, and NPR, as well as on WNYC, the BBC, and ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation).
