The Secret Ingredient Writer's Salon: Sound
Five senses. Five sessions. One story only you can tell.
Week 3 of our sensory journey explores the sense of sound—the voices, rhythms, silences, and background noise that can bring a memory fully back to life.
The Secret Ingredient Writer’s Salon is for essayists and memoirists ready to let themselves back into their own story.
This session may be attended on its own or as part of the five-week salon.
SESSION 3: SOUND
What do your words and memories sound like?
This session explores the sounds inside our memories: wind passing through trees, bacon sizzling on a griddle, the screech of a subway car against the tracks, hands clapping. And, the sound of our own sentences.
Some sounds can be both calming and activating. Trickling water brings to mind waterfalls and babbling brooks from the many nature hikes I’ve taken over the years. But it can also activate memories of battling years of water leaks while living in my first home.
Through a series of quick auditory prompts, we’ll freewrite on how listening closely can shape the rhythm of our own voice.
