NYC Product Leaders Breakfast: The Docs that Nobody Reads (and the PM who didn't write it) π
βThe docs that nobody reads (and the PM who didn't write it) π
βOur teams are writing more PRDs, research summaries, and strategy docs than ever. At the same time, a lot of orgs are hitting AI fatigue. People are reading docs less, especially now that it's so obvious when something was written by AI. Harvard Business Review even has a name for it. It's called "workslop": work that looks polished but doesn't hold up. And most of us are sending it as often as we're receiving it.
βThe bigger worry is what it's doing to PMs. When AI drafts the spec, it's easy to skip the part where you wrestle with the problem, and that's the part that makes a good PM. You see it when someone can't defend their own recommendation in an exec review, or can't get buy-in because they never really understood the problem. Call it AI cognitive atrophy.
βSo what are we doing about it? Some of us have started setting rules, like page limits on briefs, AI disclosures at the top, and nothing goes out unless you've read it yourself. We'll dig into what's working, how you enforce it without becoming the AI police, and how you measure and reward real thinking so PMs keep growing.
βBefore you come, think about:
ββ’ What rules have you put in place to keep workslop out? What's actually stuck, and what got ignored?
β’ How can you tell when a PM really understands the problem versus when AI did the thinking?
β’ How are you measuring and rewarding the thinking, not just the output?
βOptional pre-read:
β’ Don't Let AI Slop Muck Up Your Company's Processes (Harvard Business Review gifted article)
β’ HBR warns AI "workslop" is rotting companies from the inside (The Next Web)
βCome ready to confess one piece of workslop you sent and one you received.
βIf you've never been to our breakfast before:
We bring together curated groups of PM leaders to connect and share learnings and insights over casual breakfast.
βWe carefully and thoughtfully curate discussion groups. Please fill out the "Request to Join" form and we'll send invitations out if you're selected.
βPlease note that spots are limited and depending on demand, we may not be able to get back to you if you're not selected. If you are selected and are unable to make it, please do your best to RSVP "no" within at least 3 business days of the event so that we can offer your seat to someone on the waitlist.
