About Event

🤖 For a generation of young people, artificial intelligence isn’t science fiction—it’s a companion, a confidant, and a mirror.

Join Dr. Eliza Kosoy, researcher at Character.AI and UC Berkeley–trained cognitive scientist, for an eye-opening exploration of how teenagers are shaping—and being shaped by—the rise of AI. Drawing from nearly a decade of research and conversations with teens and parents, Kosoy reveals what these interactions tell us about learning, trust, and emotional connection in the age of algorithms.

Rather than fearing these tools, Kosoy invites us to reimagine them: How can AI be designed to nurture curiosity, empathy, and well-being? And what do young people’s experiences teach us about the kind of ethical and emotionally intelligent technology we might still build?

P.S. This lecture is not affiliated with Character.AI. Eliza Kosoy earned her PhD at UC Berkeley studying how children learn, reason, and form trust in technology, and has done research at MIT, Harvard, Google, and DeepMind. Fun fact: the first AI chatbot was also named Eliza—but this Eliza is not a machine.💭✨

📵 A No-Phone Lecture 📵

This event is a special experiment: we are asking attendees not to use their phones during the duration of the event (7-9pm). After you check in, we will ask you to turn your phone off and slip it into an envelope provided at the door. We won’t take your phone or lock it away, but the goal is to create a space where we can all be present together, listening and thinking without distractions.
If you’d like to take notes, please make sure to bring a journal. If you forget, we will have journals and pens available for purchase at the event. This is your chance to experience ideas and conversation the old-fashioned way, fully in the moment.
