About Event

Join us in Yoshihama, Yugawara for the next step in this traditional Japanese earthen wall workshop. I (Matt) will not be there for this one, but its a welcoming community even when I'm not present.

In the first session, we worked on the woven bamboo lattice, or komai, that forms the skeleton of a historic mud wall. This time, we’ll begin applying the earth itself: packing local soil onto the bamboo frame by hand, the way these walls have been made in Japan for centuries.

This is genuine hands-on craft, not a demo. Come ready to get muddy, or stop by and watch if you’d rather. Either way, you’ll spend time inside a building tradition most people only ever see finished, never being made.

Practicalities:

Wear clothes and shoes you don’t mind getting dirty. There will be a lunch break, so please bring your own food and drink. Children are welcome. You can join for the full day or just part of it.

The workshop is in Yoshihama, Yugawara-machi. After you sign up, we’ll send the full location, directions, and parking details. Driving your own or a rental car is recommended, though a taxi from Yugawara Station is pretty straightforward. Bus is... doable, and if you walk then definitely wear boots.
