Pilot-Scale Pretreatment Performance: Treatment Efficacy for Removal of Inorganic and Organic Constituents in Produced Water for Beneficial Reuse

featuring

Javier Casas and Mohammad Shafiq

Treatment of produced water for beneficial reuse requires substantial removal of dissolved salts via desalination. Pretreatment is required to enable effective and efficient desalination system performance, with pretreatment requirements dependent on the desalination technology employed. This presentation evaluates pilot-scale performance of pretreatment systems associated with two desalination processes, thermal distillation and membrane filtration, and implications for downstream processes and finished water quality.

Javier Casas is a water treatment professional with experience spanning R&D, process design, and technology development. As the R&D Manager at Western Midstream, he leads efforts to advance water treatment solutions for managing and reusing produced water in practical, sustainable ways. Javier holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is dedicated to developing innovative solutions to meet industrial water treatment needs.

Mohammad Shafiq is a R&D Engineer at Western Midstream, where he supports the company’s produced-water treatment program for beneficial reuse. In 1.5 years at Western Midstream, he has focused on piloting treatment technologies, managing complex water-quality and operational datasets, and optimizing thermal and membrane desalination processes.
