About Event

Decolonizing Color is a participatory workshop that invites participants to explore color as a political, cultural, and historical force rather than simply an aesthetic choice. Through guided drawing exercises, group discussion, and reflection, participants examine how ideas of minimalism, professionalism, cleanliness, and "good taste" have been shaped by colonial histories and capitalist systems.

Using personal color preferences as a starting point, the workshop connects everyday aesthetic decisions to broader histories of textile production, colonial trade, commodity fetishism, and the suppression of vibrant cultural traditions.

Participants will engage in two drawing exercises that encourage them to notice and question their instinctive relationships with color. Together, we will discuss how cultural associations with color are learned rather than universal, explore historical examples of colonialism's impact on textile industries and visual culture, and consider how aesthetic norms continue to shape our daily lives. No prior art experience is required; the workshop emphasizes curiosity, experimentation, and collective learning.

Attendees will leave with an original artwork, a written reflection, and practical tools for recognizing how colonial legacies continue to influence contemporary visual culture and everyday decision-making. The workshop aims to foster critical awareness while creating space for play, conversation, and imagining alternative ways of relating to color, design, and resistance.
