About Event

“Quantum technologies will revolutionize our lives! We cannot be left behind!”

Many of us have heard this story before. Be it governments, tech giants, defense agencies, to even Spiderman, the big players have sprung into the global quantum race. And they want us, the next generation of students, to lead it.

They paint a vision of the future where quantum applications have transformed our lives through its applications in quantum computers that can break encryption, ultra-secure satellite communication, simulating complicated proteins, and complex computation that extend beyond the limits of classical physics. They outline a plan to get there based on the principles of economic growth, collaboration, and science for the good of humanity.

But will quantum truly change all our lives for the better? History tells us that technological breakthroughs, and even the process of their development itself, often benefit the wealthy and powerful the most, while everyday people across the globe are subjected to their harms. These harms and risks of quantum are already revealing themselves, from quantum sensors being explored for devastatingly violent weapons of war to the stark “Quantum Divide” between developed and underdeveloped countries to build and access quantum technologies.

So how do we shape quantum futures such that the harms are reduced, and benefits are distributed to all?

This workshop introduces the fundamentals of quantum technologies and traces the political and economic forces shaping their development.

Whether you’re studying physics, engineering, or the humanities: join this talk, featuring PhD Candidates Clara (Centre for Quantum Technologies) & Tawakul (National University Singapore), to critically examine your place in the quantum ecosystem, and imagine ways students can come together to build a more just quantum future.

(This event is restricted to students-only).
