A Changing Climate, A Changing San Diego: Mosquitoes & Infectious Disease
Climate change is no longer a distant environmental issue—it is a growing public health challenge for San Diego.
Mosquitoes are spreading faster and farther than before, and we are beginning to see what that means closer to home. The establishment of invasive Aedes mosquitoes in San Diego County, along with the county’s first locally acquired cases of dengue in 2024, underscores how warming temperatures and changing environmental conditions are increasing the risk of mosquito-borne disease in our region. These same mosquitoes can transmit dengue, Zika, and chikungunya.
The consequences of a changing climate are already transforming public health, but LJI scientists are pursuing breakthrough research to anticipate tomorrow’s challenges.
Join La Jolla Institute for Immunology (LJI) during San Diego Climate Week for a conversation about the growing intersection of climate change, mosquito-borne disease, and human health. Attendees will hear from Dr. Sujan Shresta, an internationally recognized LJI scientist whose laboratory is working to understand how the immune system responds to mosquito-borne viruses and to develop vaccines and immune-based therapies.
Dr. Shresta will share what scientists are learning about these viruses, how a changing climate could influence their spread, and how foundational research can help communities prepare for the health impacts of a warming planet.
