Steel, Story & Spirit: A Hands-On Steel Pan Workshop
The steel pan is widely recognized as the only acoustic musical instrument invented in the 20th century — born in Trinidad & Tobago from discarded steel drums, Carnival culture, creativity, and resistance. In this intimate, hands-on workshop, you won’t just hear its story. You’ll play it.
Led by Aisha Joseph, an Antiguan steel pan builder, tuner, and musician who earned a BA in Steel Pan Fabrication and its Art Form from Northern Illinois University, this one-hour experience takes you inside the world of steel pan and Carnival culture.
You’ll explore the instrument’s history, discover the rhythms that bring it to life, and get hands-on with a real steel pan. No musical experience is necessary. Whether you’ve never touched a pan before or simply want to experience this remarkable instrument in a new way, you’ll leave having made music together — as a room.
And there’s a little something extra: every ticket includes entry into a drawing to win one of Aisha’s handcrafted miniature steel pans.
Thursday, October 22 · NDA Haus · $30 · Limited to 20 participants
This workshop will be photographed and filmed for Da Creative Space and NDA Haus promotional use. By attending, you consent to appear in that footage just let Aisha know on arrival if you'd rather not be filmed.
