About Event

📍This month, Brandon McAllister and Cole Collett are giving a talk: Bridging the Gap: Creating a Shared Design Language Between Devs and UX

👏 Special thanks to Improving for hosting Nebraska JS at their offices and for sponsoring the food.

Schedule

  • 5:30PM - arrive - eat food

  • 6:00PM - Talk Starts

  • ~7:30PM - optional Beer JS for continued discussion at The Hill

Talk Summary

Your design file calls it "icon-button-action-primary-hover". Nothing in the codebase shares that name but three other variables resolve to the same hex. So you guess, and the guess ships.

That was us. This talk dives into the process we used to fix it: how we audited the severity of our situation, how a designer and a developer rebuilt the naming structure, and the pipeline that carries those names into CSS custom properties and TypeScript without a human in the middle.

You'll leave with a case for a shared naming approach that engineering will actually buy, and a few concrete places to start.
