About Event

Join us for the opening of Infinite Oasis, Bill Buchman's first solo exhibition with Collective Z.

"Thought and expression in art have no limits. The realm of mind is an infinite oasis, where we can always stop for a drink." — Bill Buchman

Bill Buchman trained twice: as a painter, with Victor D'Amico — MoMA's longtime director of education — Fletcher Martin, and the Abstract Expressionist Robert Richenburg at Cornell; and as a jazz pianist, earning degrees at the New England Conservatory in its storied Third Stream program under Ran Blake and Jaki Byard. He has spent a career refusing to choose between the two, and calls the result Visual Jazz.

The paintings carry it. Blocks of color sit like chords, and an oil-stick line in cobalt, lime or yellow improvises across them — stated, picked up, bent, left open, returned to. Night Vision fills its canvas edge to edge; Oracle and Ulysses let a single run of line move across a white or a black ground. Nothing is tidied up afterward. The risk stays in.

The record runs three decades on both sides of the Atlantic — nearly twenty years with Gallerihuset in Copenhagen, presentations at the U.S. Embassy there, features on NPR and in American Artist, and Expressive Figure Drawing (Watson-Guptill), an instructional classic used in studios worldwide. Buchman is one of our five inaugural roster artists.

The artist will be present, and wine will be served.

Thursday, October 22 · 6–8 PM Collective Z, 325 Broome Street 1W (Lower East Side) Free and open to the public. Please RSVP.
