Inside the AI Race: U.S. Strategy, Global Competition & Malaysia's Opportunity
Artificial intelligence is becoming a defining force in global economic competitiveness, technological development and national strategy. As countries accelerate their AI ambitions, the questions are no longer just about who can build the most advanced technology, but also who can develop the right infrastructure, talent, policies and ecosystems to turn AI potential into real-world outcomes.
How is the United States approaching the AI race?
Where does Malaysia stand in an increasingly
competitive global landscape? And what opportunities can Malaysia pursue to strengthen its AI ecosystem and international partnerships?
We bring together a curated group of Malaysian AI ecosystem leaders, builders, industry representatives and relevant stakeholders for a focused exchange with Daniel Castro, President of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), a Washington-based technology policy think tank.
Drawing on his work in AI policy, innovation, digital governance and technological competitiveness, Daniel will share perspectives on the U.S. approach to AI and the broader global landscape. The session will also create space for Malaysian stakeholders to share their own priorities, experiences and challenges, contributing to a more grounded, two-way discussion.
Discussion areas
Malaysia’s AI strategy and ecosystem development: National priorities, implementation and ecosystem readiness.
U.S. AI strategy and global competition: Policy approaches, technological competitiveness and emerging global trends.
AI adoption and infrastructure: The role of talent, digital infrastructure and industry readiness in translating AI ambition into practical outcomes.
Malaysia’s opportunities and challenges: Where Malaysia can build on its strengths, address gaps and navigate the evolving AI landscape.
Malaysia–U.S. collaboration: Potential areas for knowledge exchange, ecosystem partnerships and future cooperation.
Format
The session will begin with a presentation by Daniel Castro, followed by a facilitated dialogue and discussion among participants.
Designed as a small, closed-door gathering, the format is intended to encourage candid exchanges, direct engagement and perspectives that may be difficult to explore in a larger public forum.
Why this conversation matters
Malaysia’s AI ambitions are unfolding alongside intensifying global competition for technology, investment, talent and infrastructure. Understanding how other countries approach these challenges can help inform local thinking, while insights from Malaysia’s own ecosystem can contribute to a more nuanced understanding of how AI strategies translate into different national and regional contexts.
The dialogue aims to bring these perspectives together, deepen mutual understanding and identify potential opportunities for Malaysia–U.S. and broader regional collaboration.
Please note: This is a closed-door session for confirmed participants. Attendance is subject to invitation and confirmation.
Organised as part of the Malaysia–U.S. Digital Economy Bridge, a reciprocal exchange under the YSEALI Professional Fellows Program (PFP). The YSEALI PFP is a program of the U.S. Department of State with funding provided by the U.S. Government and supported in its implementation by American Councils for International Education.
