About Event

As the idea of solar geoengineering (also known as solar radiation modification or SRM) moves from the margins to the mainstream, the climate movement is facing a critical and often uncomfortable question: how should we engage with it? This gathering brings together diverse stakeholder perspectives actively considering new ideas and urgent solutions amidst escalating climate impacts.

Join the Alliance for Just Deliberation on Solar Geoengineering (DSG) and the Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) on Wednesday, September 24, 2025 at 4:00 PM ET as we invite climate justice advocates, organizers, and environmental leaders into an honest, good-faith conversation about meaningful engagement with the accelerating consideration of SRM. Through two focused panels and a town hall-style discussion, we’ll explore the complex dynamics shaping SRM conversations today, how civil society groups navigate these discussions, and how lived experiences of vulnerability and resilience influence perceptions of SRM's risks and promises. The session will deliberately address the varying salience of SRM across different advocacy perspectives and communities, recognizing that differing histories, resources, and immediate climate vulnerabilities profoundly shape how SRM is perceived and approached.

Confirmed speakers will include: Natasha Vidangos (Environmental Defense Fund), Ricken Patel (Climate Hub), Rev Lennox Yearwood Jr. (Hip Hop Caucus), Stephen Smith (Southern Alliance for Clean Energy), Ture Laiti (Operaatio Arktis), and Quentin Scott (Chesapeake Climate Action Network). More speakers will be announced soon.

Together, we’ll explore:

  • How different advocacy traditions are approaching SRM

  • How lived experiences and climate vulnerability shape perspectives

  • The role of precaution in a world already facing catastrophic climate harms

Whether actively tracking SRM or just beginning to consider its implications, attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions, share reflections, and explore what thoughtful, values-driven engagement could mean—particularly now, when decisions around SRM are increasingly urgent and consequential.

Space is limited, registration requires approval.
