What the Ice Remembers: Glaciers, Time, and the Stories Beneath Our Feet
✨ What if the ice sheets at the ends of the Earth weren’t silent—but full of stories?
Join Kathy Kasic, filmmaker, artist-scientist, and Associate Professor of Film at Sacramento State, for a journey to the most remote—and revealing—places on the planet.
From Greenland to Antarctica, Kasic has spent months embedded in extreme polar environments, capturing the beauty, fragility, and hidden histories locked within vast ice sheets. Through striking visuals and field-driven storytelling, she’ll take us deep into glaciers and ice cores that hold records of Earth’s past—and clues to its rapidly changing future.
Blending art, science, and exploration, this lecture brings together footage from her award-winning films, including a special look at Glacine, a poetic work currently traveling the festival circuit. Along the way, Kasic explores what it means to listen to landscapes that are often perceived as empty—and why what they reveal matters to all of us.
She began her career as an evolutionary biologist conducting fieldwork in the Ecuadorian Amazon, an experience that continues to shape her approach to storytelling and science. Her work spans film, television, and international festivals, including field-directing for the BBC’s Earth Shot: Repairing Our Planet (feat. Prince William and David Attenborough). Her recent feature film, The Memory of Darkness, Light, and Ice, explores a sediment core extracted from a secret Cold War military base beneath Greenland’s ice—uncovering surprising insights about Earth’s past and climate future.
Expect awe-inspiring visuals, deep time perspective, and a reminder that even the coldest places on Earth are alive with meaning.🧊🌍✨
