About Event

A Queer Iftar, Film Screening & Fundraiser

Join Silsila Collective and partners for an evening of prayer, nourishment, and storytelling.

We are gathering to explore how affirming queer and trans lives is an essential part of our faith, and how we can build solidarity across borders to dismantle patriarchy, imperialism and heteronormativity, and re-imagine our world.

The Flow of the Evening

  • 5:45 PM | Maghreb Recitation: Starting our evening in community and prayer.

  • 6:00 PM | Iftar: Breaking fast together (Food provided).

  • 6:30 PM | Independent Isha: Space provided for those who wish to pray.

  • 7:00 PM | Film Screening: The Radical, documenting the life and work of Imam Muhsin Hendricks.

  • 8:30 PM | Facilitated Discussion: Focusing on the parallels between apartheid, queerness, and global liberation.

All proceeds from this event will be redistributed to:

  • The Silsila Mutual Aid Fund for Dolls: Supporting trans women of color in our local community.

  • Silsila Production Fund: For infrastructure and profit shares for our collective of artists.

Location: Provided upon registration. In West Harlem. Off of the 1, or the ABCD.

Tickets: Sliding scale from $35-70.

Prayers are all there for folks but are obviously optional lol. Please bring a scarf if possible to pray for Maghreb but we will have some!

Masks required and provided at door.

Please reach out to [email protected], or here on Luma if price is a concern!

About Imam Muhsin Hendricks

May he be at peace in Jannah

"God is not within the theology. God is not within a mosque. God is within our own personal experience, our own journey, our own inner reflections. God is within ourselves. So, if we are looking for God, we have to go inward.”

Imam Muhsin Hendricks was a South African imam, Islamic scholar and LGBTQ activist. He has been described as the world's first openly gay imam. Learn more about him here.

About SILSILA SOUNDS

Silsila is an LLC cooperative and production house dedicated to building sustainable infrastructure for queer and trans artists. Fueled by mutual aid and collaborative storytelling, we bridge the gap between art and activism to provide direct support for our community—including the silsila mutual aid fund for dolls of color and profit shares from our production sales. We empower our artists to dismantle systems of patriarchy and imperialism, building the radical solidarity needed to re-imagine and change our world.
