Restoring a Healthy Climate: Nature Inspired Interventions to reduce global warming and restore hope
Due to this event reaching capacity the organizers have scheduled a duplicate program on Friday, May 2 at 10 AM. We welcome you to register for that program and hope to see you on Friday
Global average temperature increases and their impacts are accelerating faster than scientists projected. Irreversible climate tipping points in the Amazon, Arctic, and North Atlantic may soon be triggered, threatening to push the climate system beyond humanity’s control.
Yet political leaders continue to delay meaningful action. Is there any realistic hope left?
Yes—there is. A promising set of interventions, modeled on processes already at work in nature, may help us slow and potentially stabilize the climate crisis. These approaches—such as increasing Earth’s reflectivity by brightening clouds, protecting snow and ice, large scale eco restoration and strengthening methane sinks—are not futuristic or untested. They mirror what nature has done for billions of years to regulate the planet’s temperature.
The science is increasingly clear: we are simply enhancing these natural processes to give the planet—and ourselves—a fighting chance.
The trajectory of global warming suggests we must be prepared to responsibly explore climate interventions rather than shy away from the research, development, and governance frameworks required to assess and potentially deploy them.
These interventions can help cool the planet in the near term, buying humanity precious time to complete the transition to a sustainable energy system and remove excess atmospheric CO₂.
Our distinguished panel will explore the scope of the climate emergency, the most promising nature-inspired interventions, and what must be done to build political will and public understanding.
Special attention will be given to the roles of the United States and India—representing both the Global North and Global South—in advancing practical solutions for a livable future.
Herb Simmens, the author of A Climate Vocabulary of the Future and a cofounder of the Healthy Planet Action Coalition will moderate our panel which includes:
Michael MacCracken, the former Executive Director of the first US climate assessment office, former President of the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences and board member of the Healthy Planet Action Coalition
Dr Soumitra Das, the Chairman and Executive Director of the Healthy Climate Initiative, an organization committed to regenerating a healthy climate with particular focus on preserving glaciers, rewilding land and helping to create a national cooling plan and strategy for India
