Akaa Ling Turns Two 阿卡凌两岁了A Birthday Pop-up & BAD BAD BAD Zine Archive & Sharing
Birthday Pop-up / Artist Archive / Community Bad Zine Archive / Zine Making / Sharing
Bad student. Bad daughter. Bad English. Bad Chinese. Bad accent. Bad handwriting.
Bad artist. Bad zine.
Who told you it was bad?
BAD BAD BAD is a participatory pop-up, zine archive, artist sharing, and birthday gathering about everything we have learned to call “bad.”
Growing up Asian, many of us become familiar with evaluation very early.
Write it again.
Your handwriting is bad.
Your Chinese is bad.
Your English has an accent.
You could have gotten a better grade.
Don't embarrass yourself.
Don't show people until you're good at it.
Be useful.
Be serious.
Be good.
Over time, “good” becomes a way of organizing ourselves. We learn what deserves to be shown. We learn what deserves to be hidden. We learn to edit ourselves before anyone else gets the chance.
BAD BAD BAD asks what happens when we stop.
WHAT IS “BAD”?
For this event, bad does not mean unsuccessful.
Bad does not mean worthless.
Bad does not even necessarily mean “bad.”
Bad is just something that failed an "expectation".
Who's exceptions? Do we care anymore?
We are not interested in proving that these things were secretly “good” all along.
Maybe they weren't.
Something doesn't have to be secretly good to deserve to exist.
Instead of asking whether something is good enough to enter an archive, we ask:
What becomes possible when “bad” is the admission requirement?
AKAA LING, AGE 0–2
The archive begins with my own work.
In 2024, I left my career in tech and began working full-time as an artist under the name Akaa Ling /
So this year—Akaa Ling turns two.
For her second birthday, instead of presenting a “best of Akaa Ling,” I want to show the opposite.
COMMUNITY BAD ZINE ARCHIVE
Now I want to see yours.
Bring something you made but never wanted to share because you thought it wasn't good enough.
A drawing you never posted.
A poem sitting in your Notes app.
A diary entry.
A school assignment.
Bad Chinese handwriting.
Bad English writing.
An embarrassing photograph.
An unfinished zine.
A rejected manuscript.
A failed print.
Fanfiction.
Something too earnest.
Something too childish.
Something too personal.
Something you made before you knew the “right” way to make it.
Something you secretly still like.
Bring it to Now Place.
Put it on the table.
Put it on the wall.
No jury.
No selection.
No improvement required.
This is not a critique.
Nobody needs to tell you how to fix it.
Nobody needs to convince you that it's secretly good.
For one afternoon, being bad is enough.
MAKE A BAD ZINE
Throughout the event, we also going to have a communal Bad Zine Station with all the wrongly printed pages, scratch paper. (bring yours!!)
We'll bring out the things that normally don't make it into finished books:
Take them.
Cut them up.
Write on them.
Fold them wrong.
Staple them crooked.
THE RULES / 规则
Bad grammar is allowed.
Bad drawings are encouraged.
Bad folding is fine.
Bad ideas are welcome.
Don't restart.
Don't fix everything.
Don't make it professional.
Don't make it marketable.
Make it bad.
Then publish it anyway.
TWO YEARS OF BEING BAD AT ART
Artist Sharing /
Starting with my first zine, I'll share some of the mistakes, abandoned directions, embarrassing decisions, accidents, and unfinished ideas that shaped my first two years as Akaa Ling.
Afterwards, anyone who wants to can share something they brought to the BAD ZINE Archive.
So this birthday is about celebrating two years of continuing to make things.
Good things.
Bad things.
Things that became books.
Things that went nowhere.
Things I understand now.
Things I still don't understand.
And somehow, after all of them—
Akaa Ling made it to two.
