About Event

FORESTSPEAK is a solo show culminating Kelsey Chen’s artist residency at Now Place, presenting a body of speculative sculpture and calligraphy that engages forest ecology and spiritual traditions of writing/inscription.

The show imagines forest-based textual and technical traditions with ceramic, ink, and found and foraged materials to ask what a humanism that is ecological and planetary in consciousness could look like.

Chen images the language of the natural world and thinks with the forest as a scriptorium—a place inside of which writing is carried out as a ritual practice that opens way to the experience of the mystical.

For Chen, the mystic sensibility is an ecological consciousness—neither religious nor secular, FORESTSPEAK looks for patterns and images in the woods to cultivate a planetary consciousness.
