About Event

🌲 Forest Ink: Natural Ink & Pen Making 🪶

Come join us for a workshop where we’ll make iron gall ink and a quill together using local foraged materials.

In ancient times, oak galls (keloid scars on trees, often which have been hurt by insect infestation) were prized as high concentration sources of tannins—which is what makes ink dark. Thoreau, when staying at Walden Pond, collected northeast oak galls and made his own ink.

Kelsey has been gathering California oak galls for the last two years and we’ll be using these galls to make some ink together.

How might making your own pen and ink from local materials deepen your writing practice as a situated practice?

✦ Materials will be provided for use during the workshop.

🪶 Please BYOF (bring your own feather) for quill making.

You will leave with a quill, a pot of ink, and some extra materials to make more ink with at home.

No prior experience required.

Please wear clothes you don’t mind staining.
