What is Public AI?
This workshop introduces public AI as a new model for building and deploying artificial intelligence as public infrastructure rather than as a private commodity.
Drawing on analogies from public utilities and multilateral projects like Airbus, we’ll contextualize the recent launch of Apertus in Switzerland, new services such as the Public AI Inference Utility, and preview discussions around a peer production approach to AI tools.
In the workshop portion, we will introduce Airbus for AI, a proposal for a third-way frontier lab built on top of the sovereign AI initiatives of several countries, we'll discuss history, incentives, open problems, and sketch out a path to bringing in the UK. If time permits, we may do a bit of light wargaming.
