Cowriting Night 夜宴: Banquet I 重音の七宗罪---1. 厌恶
夜宴:Banquet of Hate
Workshop Language: Chinglish (a mix of English and Chinese)
有时候我们写作也不是为了抒发什么大爱, 就是为了骂人。Sometimes what gets us up in the morning isn’t hope, but vivid hatred. This is a space where all hate is welcomed.
Translating hate is a fragrant experience. 厌恶是一种什么样的情绪?Where do you feel it in your body? How will you write about it? The English translation for 厌恶 is "hate," but do the two words strike a similar chord in your stomach? Is 厌恶 disdain? Is it disgust? Does it turn into aversion? Or animosity? The dictionary might define hate or 厌恶 as "bla bla bla," but who cares what the dictionary says. Who wrote the dictionary anyway? Let’s see what past writers have written about hate.
In this co-writing session, we will explore how writers have tackled the emotion of hate, from Lucifer’s animosity toward God in Paradise Lost to the chilling narrative of Malice by Keigo Higashino. The texts we will be “hating on” include The Passion According to G.H., The Hunger Angel, and 《爱,鸡尾酒与生化危机 》 “邀请” 的鱼刺 (for which an English translation is unavailable). We will look at texts available in both Chinese and English.
Our work here is a form of spiritual intestinal flora—a process of fermentation and decomposition. We will follow the host, Ginny, into the forest of words, where she forages for texts that are like fungi and dew. She does not simply read. She swallows and allows her stomach to chew for her.
You will enter with the undigested thoughts of a society that has forced you to eat bland, pre-chewed truths. We will offer you the strange, the rotten, the wildly vibrant matter of others' stories. We will not use these as recipes, but as catalysts. You will feel your own gut begin to rumble. At this banquet, you will digest the raw reality of your own life.
We will co-write in a shared Google Doc about who we hate and why. The 10+ prompts will range from:
• Giving a person or thing a different historical/fantasy/alternative reality background and playing god with their life.
• Writing the scene of someone pegging this person in prison.
• 站在第三者的角度看你对对方的厌恶,这里面是不是有一点像爱情。这个cp你磕到了吗。
At the end of the session, we will discuss our shared writing and then delete the doc as a way of releasing our hate back to the void where it came from. We will also chant magic words, burn a bonfire, and watch our hate dissipate into thin air.
