Dante's Hifi Presents: Parallels by Jaime Fiorito
Parallels, the ongoing series curated by Jaime Fiorito, explores the cultural exchange between cities, communities and musical traditions, bringing together selectors who share a deep curiosity for music beyond genres and borders. A space for unexpected connections, discovery and the art of digging deeper into records.
For this edition at Dante’s HiFi Ibiza, Jaime Fiorito invites Alex From Tokyo, the Paris-born, Tokyo-raised DJ, producer and sound designer whose career has been built around connecting musical cultures across continents. With more than three decades at the heart of the international underground, Alex has moved between Tokyo, Paris, New York and Berlin, developing a uniquely eclectic approach to DJing that draws on deep house, disco, jazz, funk, soul, electronic music and the many sounds that exist between them.
Alex From Tokyo has been a key figure in the exchange between the Japanese, European and American underground scenes. In the early 1990s, he formed the influential radio project A Deep Groove alongside DJ Deep and DJ Gregory in Paris, before returning to Tokyo in 1995, where he became an important link between European labels, artists and the emerging Japanese electronic music scene. His work has included collaborations with F Communications, Mr. Bongo and Yellow Productions, as well as his long-running production project Tokyo Black Star, created with sound engineer Isao Kumano and closely associated with the legendary Innervisions label.
Beyond his work as a DJ and producer, Alex is a curator, cultural connector and founder of world famous, his own label and creative platform. His musical vision has also extended into sound design, fashion and audio, working across projects for international brands while continuing to explore the relationship between music, technology and culture. More recently, his Japan Vibrations project has focused on highlighting the depth and diversity of Japanese electronic music and its connections with the wider world.
Joining him are Jaime Fiorito, one of Ibiza’s most respected selectors and a key figure in the island’s Balearic musical heritage, whose Parallels series is rooted in deep listening, musical knowledge and unexpected connections; and Julian Reca, Barcelona-born DJ and resident at Dante’s HiFi Ibiza, whose sets draw from soul, funk, disco, boogie, house and the wider spectrum of Black music and underground dance culture.
