Scenario: How should we release our next big TV show?

Netflix is famous for "Binge-Watching" (releasing all episodes at once). But competitors like HBO and Disney+ release episodes weekly. Now, Netflix is losing subscribers who join for a weekend, watch everything, and cancel immediately.

We will gather as the "Strategy Committee." for a new $200M show launching next month. Our goal is to look at the data, debate the options, and decide the release strategy.

Before the meeting, the executive team prepared three possible strategies. We do not have to choose one of these exactly, but use them to start our discussion.

Option A: Release all episodes at once (The classic "Binge" Model).

  • Do not break the brand promise. We are Netflix, not a TV channel. If we force users to wait, they might get frustrated and leave. Customer happiness comes first.

Option B: Release only 1 episode per week for 10 weeks.

  • This forces customers to stay subscribed for 3 months instead of 1 month. It also creates conversation on social media for a longer time.

Option C: Standard users get weekly episodes. "Premium" users (who pay extra) get all episodes immediately.

  • Monetize the impatience. If people really want to binge-watch, let them pay for the privilege. This increases our revenue per user.
