About Event

Join us on Sunday, 29 March for the first open day of People’s Lane on Bree, part of Car Free Bree Street Sundays.

Construction of the street experiment will begin on 23 March and by the 29th the public will be able to see the first phase of the installation. This open day gives residents, businesses, and visitors the opportunity to walk the street, see the progress, and speak directly with the project team.

People’s Lane on Bree is a six month street experiment that temporarily reduces Bree Street to one traffic lane in each direction and introduces planters, seating, and new commercial loading bays to improve pedestrian safety, calm traffic, and support local businesses.

The project forms part of the Safe Passage Programme and aligns with the City of Cape Town’s CBD Mobility and Accessibility Plan, which identifies Bree Street as a Special Activity Street where street design should better support people, public life, and everyday movement.

The street experiment itself is part of the public participation process. During the six month pilot the design can be adjusted based on feedback, monitoring, and engagement with businesses, residents, and road users.

Come experience the street without cars, see the progress of South Africa’s first street experiment, and learn how the project aims to create a safer, greener, and more vibrant Bree Street.
