Towards global cooperation for equitable AI in healthcare
AI has the potential to transform healthcare with earlier diagnoses, more precise treatments, and better access to healthcare services. However, without inclusive design, it risks widening disparities for marginalized groups. Biased datasets, premature or poorly governed deployment can lead to misdiagnoses or other inappropriate clinical decision-making. Furthermore, the environmental impacts associated with AI’s backend infrastructure such as resource-intensive data centres, can disproportionately affect vulnerable communities, who often benefit the least from these innovations.
Our panel will explore policy levers and implementation strategies to build equitable, culturally responsive AI in healthcare. Importantly, we will focus on opportunities for international harmonisation of policy and governance mechanisms to make the use of AI in healthcare more inclusive and equitable.
