Second Nature: Opening Reception

​Join us for the opening reception of Second Nature, a two-person exhibition of paintings by Gwen Yip and Spencer Patrick — two painters of a city that never looks back at you. Both artists will be present, and wine will be served.

​Yip's long-running Subway Backs series observes riders from behind on the platforms of the New York subway — flattened, precise, held at a distance by the architecture that contains them. Patrick's Artificial follows the same city home, where solitary figures — barefoot, eyes closed — rest inside comfort they have carefully manufactured: diet soda, sunscreen, plastic flowers, climate control. Public passage and private ritual, two forms of turning away: together the works ask how the man-made became our nature, and what of the first nature remains.
