In recent years the energy has gone out of the climate apocalypse movement and into the AI apocalypse movement. But climate was not the first of our widely-feared apocalypse movements, and AI will not be the last.
Since the First World War, there has been massive popular demand for theories about how technology is about to destroy the world and end civilization. All of them have followed very similar playbooks. This talk will cover the history of techno-apocalypse fears and the psychology behind them.
