Advances In and Application of Non-Targeted High Resolution Mass Spectrometry for Molecular Characterization of Treated Produced Water Samples
featuring Dr. Simeon Schum and Dr. William Bahureksa
Produced water is the primary byproduct of oil and gas extraction, where billions of barrels a day are produced between New Mexico and Texas in the USA. A targeted list of compounds will never fully contain the full complexity of such samples, and so the application of non-targeted techniques is valuable for identifying additional targets of interest. In this presentation we will share recent results of a comprehensive non-targeted analysis of the outcomes of three different produced water treatment trains. We will also discuss the development of new techniques for non-targeted mass spectrometry analysis that seeks to bridge the gap between structural and non-structural analysis of complex mixtures.
Dr. Simeon Schum is the Director of the Chemical Analysis and Instrumentation Laboratory (CAIL) at New Mexico State University. His research background is in the application of high-resolution mass spectrometry instrumentation to non-targeted analysis of complex organic mixtures such as organic aerosol, soil, and water.
Dr. William Bahureksa is a Post-doctoral researcher at the Chemical Analysis and Instrumentation Laboratory at New Mexico State University. His research has focused on the characterization of produced water towards beneficial reuse, and implementing novel non-targeted analysis methodology.
