Substance Abuse & Harm Reduction Workshop
Volunteer at a Los Angeles shelter and help us host an engaging, judgment-free health education workshop centered on substance use awareness, overdose prevention, and harm reduction strategies. Together, we’ll create a safe space where residents can openly discuss substance use, recovery goals, and ways to stay safe while navigating complex challenges.
Residents will rotate through interactive stations led by volunteers and trained facilitators covering topics such as recognizing the signs of an overdose, understanding safe use strategies, and learning what to do in an emergency. The workshop will also include a Narcan (Naloxone) training, information on local substance testing sites in Hollywood, and hands-on education with test strips and visuals explaining the risks of mixing substances.
The final segment — our “Real Talk” open discussion — invites participants to reflect on stigma, share their stories, and explore small steps toward recovery or safer use. The goal is to meet everyone where they are, encourage dialogue, and empower informed choices rather than shame.
Each participant will receive a Naloxone kit and resource cards with local recovery and harm reduction services. Volunteers will play a key role in facilitating conversations, distributing materials, and ensuring a respectful and supportive environment.
Volunteers are required to attend a 30-minute pre-meeting at 9:30 AM on November 9th to review key workshop materials and discuss facilitation approaches.
