

SEEING SOUNDS | On Black Music & Visual Art
Join us in the library for SEEING SOUNDS, an evening exploring the historical impact of Black music on the work of Black visual artists.
Artists and scholars of focus include Kahlil Joseph, Jamal Cyrus, Amiri Baraka, Lauren Halsey and many more. This free program is the third in an ongoing series of (Black) art history-focused teach-ins and is funded in part by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance.
ABOUT THE SERIES
(Black) Art History 101 is an informal lecture series designed to make art history more relevant, engaging, and accessible to the public. Each program will include close looking followed by a group discussion.
FACILITATOR BIO
Amarie Cemone Gipson is a Houston-born writer, editor, and founder of The Reading Room HTX. Gipson has held curatorial positions at various art institutions, including The Studio Museum in Harlem, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Independently, her writing has been published in ARTS.BLACK, Artforum, ArtNews, ESSENCE, Oxford American and many others. She previously held editor positions at Houstonia and Atlanta-based arts criticism publication Burnaway. In 2024, she was awarded the AICA-USA's Irving Sandler Award for New Voices in Art Criticism. Gipson is currently working on her debut collection of essays on Black contemporary artists from Texas.
