Book Club - Firefly by Severo Sarduy (Austin, ATX)
Join Subculture Lit Book Club with East Austin Writing Project for a deep dive into Firefly by Severo Sarduy
About
Severo Sarduy’s Firefly is the story of a boy named Firefly with an oversized head coming of age in pre-war Cuba. There are hurricanes and slave-markets and mystical cults and Firefly has no sense of purpose in the world. Unhappy and alone, Firefly feels that the best course of survival is revenge against the corrupt. Told with in lyrical and precise prose, Sarduy weaves a surreal and abstract story of exile and isolation: an allegory for Cuba’s place in the world.
