Frontier AI Builder Series: Get AI Act Ready - A Hands-On Workshop for Startups to understand and comply with the EU AI Act
About this series
The series explains the most important topics and pitfalls in the areas of Team, Legal, Finance, GTM and Product Development for AI researchers that build their Frontier AI start-up.
About this workshop
The EU AI Act is already shaping how startups build and ship AI products, and getting your classification right early can save you months of rework. Understanding your role and risk class shapes your obligations, and how you pitch your product to investors, customers and other key stakeholders. This hands-on workshop is run by the appliedAI Institute for Europe with TUM Venture Labs.
We start with an introduction to the AI Act and its risk classification, then get straight into the work. In small groups, each startup classifies its own use case with our team and tests our new risk classification toolset live. You will walk away with a first risk classification for one of your own use cases and a practical sense of what to do next. Please bring a real use case and your AI Act questions.

Claudia Baumgartner
Trustworthy AI Expert
appliedAI Institute for Europe
Claudia Baumgartner is a Trustworthy AI Expert at the appliedAI Institute for Europe, where she works on testing AI systems under real-world conditions early, while the design is still open. Two things surface there: how the technology behaves outside the lab, and what society and customers want from it. Kept apart, the first becomes an engineering exercise and the second a consultation nobody acts on. Held together, systems get designed with and for society and customers, not merely cleared for them.
She builds AI regulatory sandboxes, works with startups early, and connects networks of science, technology and society. She holds an M.A. in Responsibility in Science, Engineering and Technology from TU Munich.
Demian Niemeyer
Senior AI Regulatory Expert
appliedAI Institute for Europe
Demian Niemeyer is a fully qualified lawyer and works as an AI Regulatory Expert at the appliedAI Institute. He studied law in Frankfurt am Main, specialising in International Relations and the EU, and completed his Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Law in a Digital Economy in Lisbon in 2022.
Driven by his interest in emerging technologies, he works on the grey areas of AI regulation. His focus is on how innovators in highly regulated fields such as drones, healthcare, emotion recognition and robotics can still find room to experiment and take risks. He welcomes any discussion on how to balance regulation with space for creativity and innovation.
