Self Accelerating AI for Drug Development
β𧬠Self-Accelerating AI for Drug Development
βπ San Francisco
π
October 16β22, 2026
βAI is starting to reshape how drugs are discovered and developed. The biggest opportunities will come from building systems around the real workflows, constraints, and decisions of people already doing the work.
βThis hackathon brings together drug developers, scientists, biotech founders, and operators with AI engineers, researchers, and technical builders to work on real problems across the drug development process.
βDrug developers bring the workflows, bottlenecks, datasets, and scientific context. AI builders bring the models, agents, infrastructure, and engineering needed to turn those problems into working systems.
βOver the course of the week, teams will explore how AI can improve the full development loop β from scientific reasoning and experiment design to data analysis, execution, decision-making, and iteration.
βThe goal is not to build generic demos. It is to test what becomes possible when AI is grounded in real scientific work.
ββ‘ What makes this different
βMost hackathons begin with a prompt.
βThis one begins with real drug development workflows.
βParticipants will work directly with people who understand where development slows down, where information gets lost, where decisions are difficult, and where better AI systems could create meaningful leverage.
βProjects may explore areas such as:
βScientific reasoning and decision support
βExperiment planning and execution
βBiological and molecular modeling
βInfrastructure for AI scientists
βClosed-loop experimentation
βSelf-improving research systems
βThe broader question is simple:
βWhat does drug development look like when reasoning, experimentation, data, and execution become part of one continuous learning loop?
βπ₯ Who should join
βThis event is designed for people across both sides of the problem:
βπ§ͺ Drug developers and discovery scientists
β𧬠Computational biologists and bioinformaticians
βπ Biotech founders and operators
βπ€ AI and ML engineers
βπ οΈ Agent and infrastructure builders
βπ¬ Research engineers
βπ» Scientific software developers
βYou do not need to arrive with a team or a fully formed idea. The kickoff is designed to help participants meet, share problems, and form teams around the strongest opportunities.
βποΈ Agenda
βπ₯ October 16 β Kickoff
β4:00β7:00 PM Β· Cole-Frieman & Mallon
βWeβll open the week with a founder fireside chat, followed by short introductions from participating founders, scientists, and builders.
βThe rest of the evening will focus on meeting collaborators, sharing workflows and problems worth solving, and forming teams for the week ahead.
βπ οΈ October 17β21 β Async Build Week
βTeams will spend the week building at the intersection of AI and drug development.
βParticipants will have opportunities to work with domain experts, technical mentors, and other builders as they refine their problem, develop a prototype, and prepare to present what they learned.
βπ€ October 22 β Closing Event
β5:00β7:00 PM Β· AWS Builder Loft
βWeβll close the week with a panel of industry leaders discussing the next paradigm for AI in life sciences, followed by team pitches and networking.
βTeams will present what they built, the workflow they targeted, and what they learned about applying AI to real drug development problems.
βπ§ββοΈ Judging Panel
βProjects will be evaluated by leaders across AI, biotech, and scientific infrastructure:
βKhalil Kaddoura β CEO, Optagon Labs
Nicholas Larus-Stone β Head of AI, Benchling; Founder, Bits in Bio
Charbel Eid β VP of Platform, BigHat Biosciences
Alfredo Andere β CEO, LatchBio
βJudging will focus on the quality of the problem, scientific relevance, technical execution, and potential to improve real drug development workflows.
βπ Potential Prizes & Opportunities
βSelected teams may receive access to resources and opportunities to continue building beyond the hackathon, including:
βπ° Cash prizes
β𧬠Optagon Labs platform access
ββ‘ Model tokens and compute credits
βπ€ Introductions to Health Engineβs mentor and investor network
βπ Internship opportunities at Health Engine portfolio startups
βπ± Consideration for Health Engine acceleration
βπ§βπ¬ Mentorship from biotech and AI leaders
