About Event

Join us for an event featuring local author/psychotherapist Barbara Morris in conversation with psychotherapist Brenda Simon

Their discussion of Barbara's new book will be followed by an audience Q&A.

Porn Tales & Sex Demons: Eavesdropping on Therapy, eavesdrops on a psychotherapist's consulting room as 23-year-old Evan--raised in an abusive, hyper-sexualized environment and stuck in self-punishing behaviours--and Seb, nearing 30-babied and coddled by his parents and tortured by a numbing dread that he might be "gay"--struggle with their sexual concerns. Both have been watching porn since they were preteens. Bailey, their queer therapist, worries that porn distorts erotic fantasies, dilutes confidence, and blocks them from seeing others as more than just body parts.

Written entirely in dialogue, notes, and journal entries, this daring and unusual "novel-of-voices" explores, frankly and sensitively, the mess of sexuality that we all participate in and the joy-crushing trauma that so many of us carry with us.

Barbara Morris is a non-binary psychoanalytic psychotherapist who works with adult clients in an LGBTQ+ welcoming practice, focusing on childhood sexual trauma, dissociation, gender and orientation concerns, porn use, and the idiosyncratic meanings of sexual fantasies. Barbara has yet to see the consequences of childhood exposure to porn reflected in novels, so they decided to write their own. They hope that a novel that demystifies psychotherapy and models realistic conversations will bring the voices of their digital-native clients to vivid life and help us question the impact of porn on the new generations we are raising.
