Climate councils: bridging science and policy to implement NDCs and NAPs
Event co-hosted by the International Climate Councils Network (ICCN), the Australian Climate Change Authority, and Chile.
Climate councils, the officially mandated advisors to governments on climate change, are uniquely positioned to equip policymakers with ambitious, country-specific, and science-based advice. The expert advisory bodies offer a much-needed bridge between science and policymaking, especially when it comes to the transition plans countries submit to the UNFCCC, Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs).
This year, several governments have taken recommendations from their national climate councils on their NDCs, including Australia, Chile and the United Kingdom. This event explores how councils, which are composed of climate scientists and experts from other fields that intersect with climate change, support governments to design, implement, and evaluate science-aligned NDCs and NAPs.
Join us to hear from climate council leaders on navigating the balance between ambition and achievability, ensuring evidence-based advice whilst engaging diverse stakeholders, and aligning international ambition with national climate governance.
Speakers will include:
Natalie Unterstell, Founder and President, Instituto Talanoa
Sandra Cortés, Chair, Chilean Scientific Advisory Committee on Climate Change
Weilin Chiu, General Manager, Australian Climate Change Authority
Amanda McKee, Director, Knowledge and Learning, NDC Partnership
Ben Rhodes, Head of Secretariat, ICCN (moderator)
Please note: This event takes place in the Blue Zone of COP30. Official UNFCCC accreditation is required to attend.
