Beyond the Chatbot: What Comes Next for AI in Government
Most people’s experience of AI today is still centred on chatbots. But the next few years will bring a much broader set of possibilities for how AI is used across government.
This interactive, cross-sector workshop, delivered in collaboration with the ANU School of Cybernetics and the AI CoLab, will explore what that shift could mean in practice. Participants will consider how emerging forms of AI, particularly agentic AI, could change the way government works, strengthen connections across functions, and ultimately support better community outcomes over the next 2–5 years.
Grounded in practical examples such as community consultation, the session will move beyond abstract discussion to explore what these emerging capabilities could look and feel like in practice. The workshop will bring together perspectives from government and beyond, creating space to experiment, question current assumptions about AI, and think more broadly about what could come next.
AI CoLab events are intentionally open and collaborative. For this session we may capture photos to share publicly. This is done in line with the Charter’s values; transparent, ethical innovation and knowledge sharing to accelerate collective learning (see join.aicolab.org). By participating in this event, you agree to being photographed and for those images to be shared in accordance with this policy.
