Traces of Belonging: The Data Story of Chinese Immigrants in the Bay Area
A data visualization exhibition about the history, identity, and transformation of Chinese immigrants in the Bay Area. Generation after generation, Chinese immigrants came to the Bay to seek opportunity and build a better life. In turn, they built the city. From the first Chinese immigrant to arrive in Chinatown—a maid to a merchant family in 1848—to today, when almost one in ten residents of the Bay Area identifies as Chinese, the exhibition unveils little-known facts and hidden patterns in the surviving, living and thriving of the Chinese community—all through data.
Youyou Zhou, a journalist and data visualization designer, charts the history of SF Chinatown and the Bay Area Chinese community through a series of timelines, maps, and data posters.
The exhibition opens at 3 pm on July 3, followed by an artist talk at 5 pm. Throughout the run, an interactive data installation invites visitors to contribute their own stories to the living history of the Chinese immigrant community today.
Come sit with the data. Add your own.
