Remathau: People of the Ocean
Join us during the 25th Session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues for a special screening of Remathau: People of the Ocean (2025).
Hosted by Causeway Impact, One Reef, Wildlife Conservation Network, and the Permanent Mission of the Federated States of Micronesia to the UN, this powerful gathering will feature a screening of the powerful new documentary produced by Nia Tero:
The film, directed by Daniel H. Lin, follows Dr. Nicole Hokulani Yamase, the first Micronesian and Pacific Islander to reach the Challenger Deep, the deepest point in the ocean. Her historic journey weaves together modern science, ancestral navigation traditions, and the enduring relationship between Pacific Island cultures and the sea.
Following the screening, we’ll host a moderated conversation with Dr. Yamase and invited voices, exploring how Indigenous leadership and knowledge can guide the future of ocean stewardship and coral reef protection.
Together, we aim to move from awareness to action — supporting Indigenous-led ocean initiatives and mobilizing new partnerships and resources for reef protection.
